HOMEMADE Gingerbread Spice Mix
Makes 1 cup (250 ml)
Gingerbread spice season has arrived! For many of us, this means the delicious aromas from gingerbread baking in the oven are just around the corner. With all the indulgences that surround us this time of year, it’s so important to remind ourselves that we can still make healthy choices. Allow yourselves to enjoy all that the holidays have to offer (including the desserts!) while eating mindfully.
Whether you plan to prepare a classic baked gingerbread recipe or have discovered some new ways to incorporate gingerbread spice into your holiday eats, this simple and versatile mixture is a great “go-to” to add to your collection. The best part about making your own spice mix is that you can personalize it to suit your taste, so feel free to change up the ratios below.
Get the kids involved! Allow them to measure ingredients and mix them together. Assigning age-appropriate tasks will make children feel accomplished and confident. Cooking with children from a young age is an excellent way to support the development of fine motor skills and dexterity. It’s also a great creative outlet!
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) ground ginger
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) ground allspice
- 1/8 cup (30 ml) ground nutmeg
- 1/8 cup (30 ml) ground cloves
- 1 pinch of ground pepper
Combine ingredients directly in a storage container or jar, seal, and shake it up! Sprinkle the mixture on anything that you might put cinnamon on to make it instantly more festive. If following a gingerbread recipe, simply replace the individual gingerbread spices with the same quantity of your pre-made mixture! Easy.
