Q: Who is Food for Tots?
A: In 1994, Food for Tots was established to meet the child care market's need for a food catering service that provided healthy and delicious, meals and snacks for children attending child care centres, nursery schools and preschool programs. The foundation of the company was built with children as our main focus and today our nutritional program coupled with our focus on customer service is second to none.

Q: What is the Food for Tots Customized Menu Program
A: Food for Tots launched the child care fields first ever program that allows customers to create a unique menu for their centre by choosing between two Main Entrée options for each day of our menu cycle. Other child care catering companies traditionally have offered one lunch menu; whereas we believe each customer prefers to choose the best option for the tastes of the children in their care.

Q: What can I expect once I become a customer with Food for Tots?
A: At Food for Tots, you can expect, quality, healthy and delicious food that your children will love. We make it easy to transition to our catering service whether you are transitioning from another catering service or were cooking onsite. Each customer has a dedicated Customer Service Representative who works closely with you to identify your centre’s needs and set-up as quickly as possible. Q: How is the menu created?
A: We design our menu with children in mind. Our food is child-friendly, appetizing and appealing. All menus are prepared in accordance with the Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA), the Canada Food Guide, support the Municipal and Regional Criteria and are approved by a third-party Registered Dietitian as well our in-house certified Red Seal Chef.

The menu creation process is a collaborative team effort, based on listening to our customers feedback, conducting taste testing, and the creation of allergy substitutions. Once testing meets our expectations we begin to implement the first 4 week cycle and create a friendly menu guide for our customers.

We send out a menu survey after the first cycle; and take into consideration suggested changes. We have an open line of communication with our customers to ensure the best service and meals are always being delivered.

Q: How often does Food for Tots change their menu?
A: Food for Tots changes its menu twice a year - a Spring/Summer menu with seasonal fruits and vegetables and a Fall/Winter menu offering more comfort foods and hearty vegetables during the colder seasons. In doing so, the offering provides seasonal variety as well as the opportunity for children to try new and exciting meals. Customers are provided with menu feedback surveys regarding the current menu and are also asked to provide feedback and ideas for the planning stages of the next menu.

Q: How do you handle food allergies and religious restrictions?
A: Food for Tots is renown in the field for its ability to handle allergies. We carefully manage children’s food allergies and restrictions and work closely with our customers to understand their centre’s specific needs when it comes to allergy management. We accommodate most allergies, multi-allergy requests and religious dietary restrictions.

All of our allergy-free meals are prepared and packaged in a separate area of our 100% nut-free, pork-free and shellfish-free facility. We ensure quality control on all allergy replacements by sending items out separately from the other food and packing items so they are easily identifiable.

Q: How can I make sure all food allergies and religious restrictions are followed?
A: Food for Tots has created an Allergy Template form that is given to each centre. The centre or school representative is then asked to prepare the list of children requiring allergy substitutions. To properly address and accommodate the substitution, specific information is required about the child and the allergy. This information is then inputted into the Food for Tots allergy management software and the allergy requirements are compared to our menu recipes, and replacement meals are prepared for these children.
